A Rare And Unusual English Flintlock Steel Barrel Blunderbuss Carbine With Spatulate Under-mounted Spring Bayonet By Grice (James Grice (?) 1794-1798).

16 and 1/4 inch heavily swamped round barrel. 7/8th inch bore at muzzle. Barrel with top flat engraved with lines paneled around “LONDON” in script. Two gunmaker’s proofs. Breech tang finely engraved with foliage and engraved screw. Stepped bolted lock with push-on safety. Lock signed “GRICE” in script. Bridled frizzen. Swan neck cock line engraved as is the frizzen.

Elaborate, elongated engraved steel triggerguard with acorn finial. Engraved steel fore-end cap houses the point of the bayonet whose release lever is attached to the triggerguard. Finely forged, hollow ground, spatulate bayonet measures 6 inches. Steel buttplate engraved with foliage.

Finely figured walnut half-stock is checkered at the wrist with Durs Egg style checkering and shell carving behind breech tang. Barrel is clean with only minor staining. Lock is clean steel color. Action is crisp on both half and full cock. Bayonet springs out properly. Bore is fine. Walnut stock is very good with crisp carving and checkering. 32 inches overall.
