A Rare And Unusual Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Navy Rifle.
32 and 3/4 inch barrel. .52 caliber rimfire. Flayderman estimates U.S. Navy purchases at 700 and another 100 sold commercially. These scarce Sharps rifles armed Union Marine guards during the Civil War and others saw service on Union Mississippi River gunboats.
Though of standard configuration with brass buttplate and bayonet lug, this rarity is entirely unmarked and appears to have left the factory this way. Barrel and frame with much fading blue finish. Walnut buttstock with some varnish on the right side, in good condition as is the long walnut fore-end. The action is crisp and the bore fine+.
A fascinating Civil War Sharps & Hankins Navy rifle.
