A Rare Continental Zischagge (Lobster Tail) Helmet Of Particularly Elegant Form And Unusually Fine Quality Circa 1635.
The two piece skull finely fluted and roped at the flute apexes. The helmet apex with a star and acorn shaped fluted finial. The lower section studded with decorating brass rivets. The brim with roped border studded with grass rivets ensuite with the skull. 4 lame tail with scalloped plates each studded with brass rivets and with roped borders. Original earflaps pierced and repoussed with 6 petaled flower, plain borders and brass rivets. Original steel nasal bar elegantly pierced and ending in a finely cut shield.
The interior showing great age and fine forging from a master armorer’s hammer. Remnants of ancient leather lining are present particularly on the interior of the brim and the fourth neck lame. Brass plume holder intact.
This fine helm weighs 3.8 pounds and is one of the best of this classic type we have seen.
