A Very Fine And Exemplary Classic Continental Swept Hilt Rapier With Gilded Hilt Circa 1620

Stock No:001852

A Very Fine And Exemplary Classic Continental Swept Hilt Rapier With Gilded Hilt Circa 1620.

39 inch rapier blade with 8 and 1/4 inch fuller. The fuller stamped on the left side AGUI (Eagle) the remainder of the inscription indecipherable. The right stamped MORIUNO (In death). The finely dished ricasso unmarked.

The waisted wood grip luxuriously bound with twisted strands of copper wire surmounted by copper “Turks Heads", the grip likely period ensuite with the rapier. The swept hilt with saltires and 8 inch quillons ending in fluted balls retaining some original gilding. The double rings each with two central fluted balls ensuite with the quillons. The elaborate D guard with two fluted and gilded balls sweeping up and ending in another fluted ball. The globose gilded pommel finely fluted ensuite with the balls on the hilt prove that this lovely rapier is homogenous rather than composite like most rapiers offered for sale.

Condition of the hilt is fine throughout. The blade with some wear and staining but fine overall.

This splendid sword is 47 and 1/2 inches overall and can be considered museum worthy in every respect.
