Fine And Rare Original Brass Lion Hilt French Hunting Pistol Sword Circa 1765
A Fine And Rare Original Brass Lion Hilt French Hunting Pistol Sword Circa 1765.
19 inch clipped spear point blade, 3 and 5/8th inch .40 caliber cannon muzzle pistol barrel with fine turnings. The pistol with internal box lock mechanism. The gooseneck hammer extending into the brass hilt which is relieved to receive it. This construction guarantees that the pistol and the sword were born together and that the pistol was not added later to a sword as all too many are. The trigger extends through the hilt.
The shell which protects the user from the powder flash is finely cast and pierced with a hunting hound attacking a stag amid a wood. The grip scales are finely engraved with scrolling foliage on one removable panel and a shell design with fleurets on the other which allow access to the internal mechanism.
The d-guard is engraved ensuite with each grip panel demonstrating the refinement of this lovely hunting sword pistol. The pommel is a stylized lion head well detailed adding a particularly attractive dimension to this 18th century rarity.
Mechanically fine throughout and the bore is good. 23 and 1/2 inches overall. Condition is fine.
This is a very attractive and entirely genuine of the period rare combination weapon that will appeal to any advanced collector of oddities, hunting swords or rare flintlocks.
