A Rare And Desirable Pair Of Real Period Quality English Dueling Pistols By Palmer, Rochester (William Rochester, 1810-1826, Kent, 53 High Street) Circa 1815.
9 inch heavy smoothbore, octagonal barrels swamped at muzzles, copper fore-sights, rear sight, double platinum lines at breech, deeply sunken platinum lined cartouche with (PALMER ROCHESTER). 60 caliber.
Barrels with smooth gray surface. Single bolted lightly engraved locks signed “Palmer” at tail. Engraved ‘French’ style cocks. Elaborate and very high quality rainproof pan with platinum lined touch-hole, sculpted and engraved bolted frizzens. Finely engraved steel trigger guards with trophy of arms and classic pineapple finial. Single side nail, steel ramrod pipes. Both dueling pistols retain their original ramrods. Silver wedge escutcheons compliment silver fore-end bands.
Varnished, figured walnut half stocks, finely checkered at wrists with panels. The stocks in fine condition throughout with original finish. Vacant silver thumb pieces. Breech tangs are beautifully engraved. Actions are crisp and bores are good. One cock has been fractured at some time and repaired resulting in loss of engraving but appears to be original. 14 and 1/2 inches overall.
