A Good British Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Military Pistol By “R. Watkin” Birmingham Circa 1750.

12 inch smoothbore barrel of musket caliber, .70 bore. Three gunmaker’s proofs on classic Sea Service style barrel. Single bolted plain lock with swan neck cock boldly signed in capital letters “R. WATKIN”. Regulation brass furniture. Figured walnut fullstock.

The pistol in good overall condition with polished barrel and lock, crisp brass mounts and fine condition stock. The action is excellent on both half and full cock. The bore is fine. Ramrod a replacement.

Heavy Dragoon flintlock pistols like this one were for commercial military use and were sold to American colonists during the French and Indian War. A recent theory postulates that these pistols were supplied to the “Virginia Light Horse Horse Rangers” commanded by Captain Robert Stewart.

Regardless it is a large (19.5 inches) and handsome British flintlock military pistol that may well have been used in Colonial America.
