An Extremely Rare All Steel Scottish Heart-butt Scottish Flintlock Belt Pistol Signed By The Maker “I M” Circa 1690.
7 and 1/2 inch barrel. 50 caliber. The barrel with cannon muzzle in three stages with turnings and classic Celtic silver inlays, one engraved with crosshatching, one as a fish, a lovely engraved silver band near breech, altogether a total of seven silver inlays.
The breech raised to form a rear sight. The original flintlock lock plain but elegant with swan neck cock. Large maker’s initials “I M”. Likely the justly famed Scottish gunmaker John Murdoch of Doune near Stirling who was active from 1690-1720. Classic austere but beautifully forged all steel fullstock with the original 6 inch long engraved steel belt hook. The heart-butt unusually well formed and decorated with turnings.
This lovely pre-Culloden retains its original pricker pierced for a Tommy bar, The steel ramrod pierced for a Tommy bar possibly the original, original button trigger. 12 inches overall.
Sticky on full cock. Bore is good. With the exception of the brass single ramrod pipe this ultra rare Scottish pistol is entirely original. Most Scottish pistols from the late 17th and early 18th century have undergone substantial alterations with conversions from snaphaunce to flintlock common as are entirely replaced locks. To find a “pure” pre-Culloden heart-butt is an opportunity not to be missed.
