A Cased High Art Exhibition Belgian Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun By J. Streels, Liege (1851-1866) Possibly For The Great Exhibition Of 1851 With Superbly Fluted and Relief Carved Stock, Articulated Hammers, And Architectonic Triggerguard Circa 1851.
Beautifully fluted Damascus barrels with relief chiseled raised rib marked “CANONS DAMAS DE PARIS” 30 and 3/4 inches long. 12 gauge. Long breech tang finely relief engraved with leaves and vines typical of exhibition guns by Le Page and Thomas of the period. Sculpted exhibition style back action locks with relief engraved vines and enlarged engraved panels of trophies of arms.
Articulated hammers engraved with leafy foliage even on the bevels all ensuite. Triggerguard with relief engraved scrolling vines and panel engraved with trophy of arms featuring cannon and flag. Steel buttplate engraved with vines ensuite with all other mounts and further with panel engraved with maker’s logo “J. STREELS EN FABT” likely for exhibition.
Fluted ultra deluxe figured Circassian walnut butt superbly carved In high relief with incredibly intricate scrolling foliage of exhibition quality. Some wear throughout otherwise very good condition, the wood particularly so retaining original French polish and lovely figure. All engraving is quire sharp.
Actions are crisp and bores are good. This exhibition quality Continental sporting gun is cased in its original mahogany case lined in red velvet with accessories comprising fine large brass powder flask with gilt spout, leather shot flask embossed with pheasants and dog and various other loading and cleaning tools including rods. This wonderful exhibition gun retains its original brass tipped ramrod with worm.
