A Rare And Fine Breechloading Silver Mounted Rifled Carbine By Henry Delaney (Longacre Holborn) Circa 1730.

20 inch round two stage turn-off steel barrel with swelling muzzle. .65 caliber bore. 8 groove rifling. The barrel unscrews and is retained by a ring and a hinged bar. The breech engraved with a band of foliage, The action engraved at tail signed “H. Delany”. The swan neck hammer engraved with a flourish. Border engraved frizzen.

Engraved steel triggerguard chiseled with an urn and blossom. Elaborate cast and chased silver openwork sideplate. Beautiful large engraved solid silver buttplate. Fancy silver thumbpiece. Ultra highly figured stump walnut buttstock with decorative moldings behind breech tang and around the triggerguard. All small parts are original. Action is excellent as is the bore.

The form on this carbine is elegant. Overall condition is fine. Minor old repair on wood on right side of breech tang.

Henry Delany is one of the distinguished group of Huguenot gunmakers who emigrated to England to escape religious persecution on the Continent including Andrew Dolep, Pierre Monlong, and Lewis Barbar. This splendid innovative silver mounted carbine is typical of these master gunmakers and would be a justly prized addition to any collection of fine English flintlock firearms.
