A Superb Gold Damascened 18th Century Indian Heavy Battle Axe With Splendid Wootz Damascus Crescentic Blade,
Heavy Lion Head Hammer And Magnificent Gold Damascened Twisted Dragon Finial. The blade 6 and 3/8th inches across with gold Damascened border and made of the most beautiful wootz Damascus. The central section with gold Damascened calligraphy on each side, The hammer is a gold Damascened lion head. The gold Damascened dragon finish attaches the axe to the shaft and is of museum quality.
The shaft is gold Damascened at the top and the butt and exhibits a Damascus type pattern throughout its 23 and 1/2 inch length.
The condition is very fine showing expected wear to gold Damascening from age and use. This fantastic Indian axe has nothing to do with the look alike Qajar parade axes commonly encountered.
This is a very serious 18th century axe made for battle use and owned by an Indian warrior of means. The calligraphy once translated will enhance the importance of this true battle weapon. If the axe head were not enough the dragon twists off revealing a 25 inch four sided sword. With a weight of 3.3 pounds this axe was designed to split heads and helmets.
