The Splendid Presentation Quality Gilded Pattern 1860 Civil War Officer’s Sword Of GAR Department Commander Colonel Henry J Seeley (1848-1937).

30 inch beautifully etched and gilt for 2/3rds of its length with spread eagle, E Pluribus Unum, martial trophies and “COL. H.J. SEELEY” in a panel. Very elaborate cast chased and pierced guard with magnificent relief eagle and shield. Cast silver grip. Pommel with further eagle and shield. Fire gilded scabbard with pierced and elaborate mounts.

Condition of blade, hilt and scabbard all with most of their gilding. One very minor door pinch on right side of scabbard close to the drag. Colonel Seeley enlisted at the age of 15 in an Indiana regiment and saw service with the Army of the Cumberland under both General Thomas and General William Tecumseh Sherman until the war’s end.

A most attractive sword owned and one that was proudly worn by an American hero.
