A Very Rare And Desirable Silver Capped Saxon Left-Hand Dagger Late 16th Century Circa 1570-1580.

The robust 10 and 7/8th inch tapering double-edged blade of diamond section with central fuller over most of its length extending from the fluted ricasso. The classic Saxon Electoral Armoury left hand dagger.

The hilt of dark blued iron with short gourd shaped quillons and small side ring. The core shaped pommel capped with the original engraved silver cap. The fish skin grip enclosed in four longitudinal reinforcing straps.

Southwick refers to this type as a “Saxon Landsknecht dagger” a similar example appears on page 199. These highly desirable Renaissance daggers are all from the Saxon Royal Armouries in Dresden. There have been several dispersals beginning with the Rudolph Lepke sale in Berlin 7-8 October 1919 and the final sale at Sotheby’s London on March 23rd 1970 titled “Highly Important Arms from the Saxon Royal Collections”.

15 inches overall. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of these unquestionably royal daggers and in very fine original condition. Many years might pass before another great Saxon dagger appears for sale, Do not miss this one.
